Boy carrying toy gun shot dead by police

A 13-year-old boy carrying a replica assault rifle has been shot
dead by police in the US state of California, the BBC reports.
Officers in the city of Santa Rosa say they opened fire after the
boy refused orders to drop the rifle, which they believed to be
real.
The shooting on Tuesday is now being investigated.
It comes a day after a 12-year-old boy in Nevada shot dead a
maths teacher at his school and wounded two fellow pupils
before taking his own life.
In the latest incident, two sheriff's deputies saw the teenager
"with what appeared to be some type of rifle", a news release
from the Sonoma County Sheriff's office said.
The deputies called for backup and repeatedly ordered the boy to
drop the gun before firing several rounds from their handguns,
police said.
The boy, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was later
identified by his family as Andy Lopez.
"He was holding the weapon in his left hand. He began to turn
toward his right in the direction of the deputy, and in so doing he
moved the gun toward the deputy, and the deputy's mindset was
that he was fearful he would be shot," Lt Paul Henry of Santa
Rosa police said.
But the boy's father, Rodrigo Lopez said the shooting made no
sense. "My son lost his life. He's not alive any more just because
of the mistake of somebody."
The replica gun had belonged to a friend, he said.
The sheriff's office said a plastic handgun had also been found in
the boy's waistband.
Witness Brian Zastrow told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat he
heard seven shots.
"First, I heard a single siren and within seconds I heard seven
shots go off, sounded like a nail gun," he said.
One man who saw the events unfold said the shooting was over
in an instant.
"He pulled over to the kid walking and he just opened the door and
shot him, three shots," Ismael Mondragon told KGO-TV.
Police Lt Dennis O'Leary said the deputies had been placed on
administrative leave pending the inquiry.
Sheriff Steve Freitas described the shooting as a "tragedy" and
promised the investigation would be thorough and transparent.
"As a father of two boys about this age, I can't begin to imagine
the grief this family is going through," he said.
A spokeswoman for the boy's school described him as "a very
loved student, a very popular, very handsome young man, very
smart and capable".
Linsey Gannon, assistant principal at Lawrence Cook Middle School,
said he played trumpet in the school band.
"Our community has been rocked by his loss," she said.
Candles, teddy bears and flowers have since been left at the
scene of the shooting.
"He was a good kid, he was 13 years old. He didn't look like a man,
Andy, he was a boy," one friend told local media.
On Monday, a 12-year-old boy who has not been named opened
fire at a school in Sparks, Nevada, killing maths teacher and
Afghanistan veteran Michael Landsberry.
Police said Mr Landsberry had tried to coax the boy to drop the
gun, enabling children in the playground to flee.
The boy then shot and injured two fellow pupils, before taking his
own life on the outdoor basketball court.
President Barack Obama has recently renewed calls for changes
to US gun laws following a series of deadly shootings. However,
the BBC's Alastair Leithead in Los Angeles says the proposals face
fierce resistance.

ASUU strike: Idle students take up menial jobs

Some undergraduates in Kaduna have ventured into various
vocations to keep them occupied as the strike by the Academic
Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) persists, the News Agency of
Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Some of them who spoke with NAN on Friday in Kaduna said that
they had to find something to do, to keep their minds occupied
and avoid trouble.
Grace Ocholi, a 300-level student of English at Ahmadu Bello
University, Zaria, said she secured a temporary job as a fuel
pump attendant at a petrol station in Sabon-Tasha area of the
city to enable her earn some money until the end of the strike.
"Everyone in my house go out every morning to work, and my
younger sisters go to school while I stay home and sleep awaiting
for their return.
"I am not okay with staying idle so I decided to engage in
something useful," Grace said.
Seun Ali, an HND Computer Science student of Kaduna Polytechnic
told NAN that he worked at my uncle's workshop to earn.
some money instead of staying idle at home.
Another student, Henry Samuel of Mass Communication
Department, Ahmadu Bello University, said he was assisting his
father in selling tiles before he was admitted to the university.
Samuel said he had to continue manning the business until the end
of the lecturers' strike.
"So instead of wasting time waiting for the prolonged strike to
end, I returned to continue from where I stopped," he said.
The students advised their colleagues to engage in something
meaningful while the strike lasted, so as not to fall into the
temptation of going into crime due to idleness.
NAN recalls that ASUU had been on strike since June over the
non-implementation of a 2009 agreement it entered with the
Federal Government on the funding of public universities.

Fifa President Sepp Blatter paid tribute to Nigeria's late football
hero Rashidi Yekini Thursday.
The former Olympiacos and Vitoria Setubal striker would have
turned 50 on 23rd of October if he were alive, and Blatter
tweeted a tribute in honour of the legend's birthday.
"Rasheed Yekini would have been 50 today. His name as scorer
of Nigeria's first World Cup goal lives on," the message on
Blatter's official twitter handle read.
Yekini was top scorer in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations enroute
to the Super Eagles winning the competition which he was also
adjudged to be the Most Valuable Player.

Nigeria: Journalists humiliated from Boko Haram Suspects'Trial

The journalists, who were at the Lagos Federal High Court,
yesterday, to cover the arraignment of the alleged 17 members
of Boko Haram were greeted with humiliation and threat from
men of the Department of State Services, DSS, that escorted
the accused persons.
The journalists were sent out of the courtroom by the armed
security operatives and one of them threatened to arrest the
journalists if they resist.
A senior DSS officer told newsmen that the directive to keep
them away from the arraignment of the suspected Boko Haram
members was from the Presidency.
Other litigants were equally barred from the courtroom. When the
Boko Haram case was called, some lawyers were implored to
leave the court, this, it was gathered, was due to the small size
of the courtroom.
However, the arraignment of the suspected Boko Haram
members, which had suffered two adjournments on October 2
and 9, due to lack of interpreter and the absence of the trial
judge, respectively, could not go on yesterday.
This was because the first to fifth accused persons namely (Ali
Mohammed, Adamu Karumi, Ibrahim Usman, Bala Haruna, Idris Ali)
did not have legal representation.
Presiding judge, Musa Kurya, adjourned the matter till November
27, for the arraignment of the accused persons.

Ancelotti:It's Ronaldo's time to win Balon d'or

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti believes it is Cristiano Ronaldo's
time to win the Ballon d'Or this year, ahead of Lionel Messi and
Franck Ribery.
The Portuguese star has played second fiddle to Barcelona ace
Messi since winning the prize for the first time back in 2008,
with the Argentine claiming the last four titles in a row, but
Ancelotti believes he deserves to win the latest crown for the
all-round impact he has on the Spanish giants.

the most with his professionalism. He's very serious, he has

"I asked him and he told me he prefers to play from the right. I

Ancelotti hinted that Diego Lopez will keep his place for
Saturday's clash - though he insisted the club captain does not

Clayton Pettet, 19, is set to have gay sex for the first time in a
gallery full of spectators for a project entitled "Art School Stole
My Virginity".

ASUU STRIKE: ASUU Demands N1.5tr To End Strike

The Senate on Wednesday said that the striking Academic Staff
Union of Universities (ASUU) wants N1.5 trillion to end its ongoing
strike.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Senator
Uche Chukwumerije, released the figure in his contribution on a
motion urging the striking lecturers to call off their strike.
The motion sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Victor
Ndoma-Egba, and 106 others is entitled: "Appeal to Academic
Staff Union of Universities to call off the strike action and return
to work."
Chukwumerije, who read the controversial 2009 agreement
between the Federal Government and ASUU, said that part of
the component of the agreement on funding stipulated that "all
regular federal universities shall require the sum of N1.5 trillion
for the period 2009 to 2011.
He said that ASUU is insisting that the agreement must be
implemented to the latter.
He said the agreement also said that "This money is to be paid in
three installments, 2009 – almost N500 billion; 2010 – almost
N500 billion and 2011 – almost N506 billion.
Apart from the N1.5 trillion the agreement also stipulated that
"each state university shall require N3.6 million" while "a minimum
of 26 per cent of the annual budget should be allocated to
education."
According to him, the agreement also said that "education should
be put on First Line Charge" while the Education Tax Act should
be amended to its original concept as High Education Fund."
He noted that the agreement said that "Governing Council of
Universities should access and effectively utilize from Education
Tax Fund funds for research, training and development of
academic staff."
Other components of the agreement included Salary Structure of
Academic Staff of Nigerian universities and earned academic
staff allowances.
The earned academic staff allowances include: "Post graduate
supervision allowances; teaching practice and industrial
allowances; honorarium for external moderation of undergraduate
and postgraduate examination system, postgraduate study
grants; external assessment of readers or professors, call duty
and clinical duty and hazard allowance and excess workload
allowance."

MADRID (AP) - Cristiano Ronaldo maintained his impressive form in
the Champions League by scoring two goals to give Real Madrid a
2-1 win against 10-man Juventus on Wednesday.
The Portugal forward angled a shot behind goalkeeper Gianluigi
Buffon to score in the fourth minute from a sublime pass by
Angel Di Maria.
Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal then pulled down Sergio Ramos in
the area and Ronaldo confidently converted the penalty in the

Fernando Llorente had equalized for Juventus seven minutes
earlier by squeezing the ball between goalkeeper Iker Casillas and
the post in the 22nd. Llorente, a former Atheltic Bilbao player,

''We had good control of the game, and with one man extra we
didn't need any more intensity,'' Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said.
Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini was sent off in the 48th on a
straight red card for hitting Ronaldo in the face with his hand as
he vied for the ball shoulder-to-shoulder, but the Portugal
forward missed the resulting free kick.
''It was a very serious and rigorous decision,'' Juventus coach

Nokia has launched the Lumia 1020 smartphone with 41
megapixel, aimed at delighting another segment of the Nigerian
market.
The Lumia 1020 is being launched in the Nigerian market in
partnership with Etisalat Nigeria and the national carrier of the
United Arab Emirates, Etihad Airways.
According to the company, the Lumia 1020 is an improved version
of the Nokia 808 Smartphone, which the company launched in

Eating saturated fats 'can protect against heart disease'

Eating saturated fat is GOOD for you and can actually help
protect against heart disease.
That's the view of one of the UK's leading cardiologists, who
is calling for a radical shift in the current advice to cut down
on saturated fat levels in our diets.
Dr Aseem Malhotra said cutting the amount of such fats has
"paradoxically increased" the risk of heart disease.
He also argued in the British Medical Journal that saturated fat
had been "demonised" for decades as a major cause of
cardiovascular disease.
He says, however, there is little scientific evidence to suggest
such a link, he said, and suggested that an increase in sugar
and carbohydrate intake had been overlooked as a cause.
Dr Malhotra, a cardiology specialist registrar at Croydon
University Hospital in London, criticised current medical guidance
and its "obsession with levels of total cholesterol", which he
said "has led to the over-medication of millions of people with
statins", which reduce cholesterol levels.
Instead, adopting a Mediterranean diet rich in oily fish, olive oil,
nuts and fruit and vegetables after a heart attack is almost
three times as powerful in reducing death rates as taking a
statin, he said.
Dr Malhotra said: "The mantra that saturated fat must be
removed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease has
dominated dietary advice and guidelines for almost four
decades.
"Yet scientific evidence shows that this advice has,
paradoxically, increased our cardiovascular risks."
He highlighted studies in the United States which revealed that
while the proportion of energy consumed from fat had fallen
from 40 per cent to 30 per cent (although absolute fat
consumption remained the same), obesity rocketed.
He noted: "One reason: when you take the fat out, the food
tastes worse.
"The food industry compensated by replacing saturated fat
with added sugar."
Dr Malhotra added: "It is time to bust the myth of the role of
saturated fat in heart disease and wind back the harms of
dietary advice that has contributed to obesity".
Other experts have backed Dr Malhotra's views.
Professor David Haslam, chairman of the National Obesity
Forum, said: "It's extremely naive of the public and the medical
profession to imagine that a calorie of bread, a calorie of meat
and a calorie of alcohol are all dealt in the same way by the
amazingly complex systems of the body.
"The assumption has been made that increased fat in the
bloodstream is caused by increased saturated fat in the diet,
whereas modern scientific evidence is proving that refined
carbohydrates and sugar in particular are actually the
culprits."
Timothy Noakes, professor of exercise and sports science at
the University of Cape Town, added: "Focusing on an elevated
blood cholesterol concentration as the exclusive cause of
coronary heart disease is unquestionably the worst medical
error of our time."

Wenger laments gunners naivety

Arsene Wenger felt his Barclays Premier League leaders paid the
price for naive defending as a late goal from Robert Lewandowski
condemned the hosts to a 2-1 Champions League Group F defeat
to Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners had done well to fight back from going
behind on 16 minutes when Henrikh Mkhitaryan drilled
the ball in after Aaron Ramsey had given away
possession on the edge of his own penalty area.
Olivier Giroud's close-range strike sent the teams
into the break on level terms, before substitute
Santi Cazorla curled a 20-yard effort against the
woodwork.
All of Arsenal's efforts, though, were undone as Dortmund - last
season's beaten finalists - netted with just eight minutes left on
the counter-attack through Lewandowski to ruin Wenger's 64th
birthday and leave the Gunners still with work to do to qualify for
the knockout stages.
'We put ourselves on the back foot with the first goal and naive
for the second goal,' he said. 'If you look at the number of saves
our keeper had to make tonight and you concede two goals, you
can say that we can only look at ourselves for not being mature
enough in situations like that.
'If you cannot win the game, you don't lose it. Especially in the
second half when we were on top, we made things difficult for
ourselves by giving them the second goal.'
Lewandowski's goal came after a lucky escape for the Pole, who
was only shown a yellow card by Swedish referee Jonas
Eriksson when he clashed with Laurent Koscielny, and looked to
have caught the defender with a stray elbow.
'It looked like [it could have been a red card] but I haven't seen it
well,' Wenger added. 'But the referee was in a much better
position than I was and didn't decide to do it. I will have to look at
it again, I don't know.'
England midfielder Jack Wilshere was replaced in the second half
having been troubled by an ankle problem, which is not expected
to keep him out of the weekend's game at Crystal Palace.
Wenger said: 'You could see that he was not completely himself
and that is why I decided to take him off.
'At the moment it is his desire to play that gets him through the
game. It looks like he was handicapped after the first tackle he
got. He looked like he landed awkwardly. He looked to me that he
limped a little bit.
'We will see how he responds in the next two or three days, we
have to wait for the medical assessment.'
Arsenal now find themselves in a three-way fight for top spot in
their group on six points, along with Dortmund and Napoli - who
beat Marseille 2-1 - and will need a better result when they
travel to Germany in two weeks time.
'It is tight and difficult for us, but possible,' said Wenger. 'You
have three teams with six points, and we have played twice at
home and once away, so that means we need a result away
from home - but we can do that.'
Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp, who watched from the stands
because of a touchline ban, felt his side were the worthy victors
in London.
'I saw my team fighting and for us we deserved to win this
game,' he said.
'Winning abroad in London, of course you need a bit of luck for
that but if you manage to make the difference with one extra
goal then I think you also deserve it.
'If you watched this game not for Arsenal and not for Dortmund,
you can say maybe Arsenal had some better situations but they
played at home and we didn't come here to dominate Arsenal in
London, we came here to get a result and that's what we did.'

Gold grows on tree in Australia

Scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial
Research Organisation (CSIRO) made the find in the resource-rich
Kalgoorlie region of Western Australia, which was the site of a
major gold rush in the late 1800s.
Geochemist Mel Lintern said it appeared the trees sucked up the
gold particles from 30 metres below the ground through their
roots.
"The eucalypt acts as a hydraulic pump – its roots extend tens
of metres into the ground and draw up water containing the
gold," he said.
"As the gold is likely to be toxic to the plant, it's moved to the
leaves and branches where it can be released or shed to the
ground."
In research published in the journal Nature Communications, the
CSIRO said the leaf particles themselves would not trigger a new
gold rush as they measure just a fifth the width of a human hair
and are visible only through advanced X-ray imaging.
Researchers involved in the study estimated it would take the
gold from 500 eucalyptus trees to make a single wedding band.
But they said the discovery presented a gilt-edged opportunity to
improve the exploration methods used to search for gold, making
them more efficient and environmentally friendly.
"This link between… vegetation growth and buried gold deposits
could prove instrumental in developing new technologies for
mineral exploration," they said.
New discoveries of gold have fallen by 45 percent in the past
decade, while prices have skyrocketed as reserves steadily
dwindle – the cost of the yellow metal shot up by 482 percent
between December 2000 and March this year.
The CSIRO said scientists could use a technique known as
"biogeochemical sampling" to give an indication of the presence of
gold.
"By sampling and analysing vegetation for traces of minerals, we
may get an idea of what's happening below the surface without
the need to drill," Lintern said.
"It's a more targeted way of searching for minerals that reduces
costs and impact on the environment."
He said the method could also be used to find other metals such
as zinc and copper.
Nigel Radford, a geochemist who has been involved in gold
exploration for decades in Western Australia, said the discovery
was a world-first with major implications for prospectors.
"A lot of this stuff has been speculated about for some time,
but the identification of the gold particles in the leaf materials is
completely convincing and very, very important for the future of
mineral exploration," he told the Australian Broadcasting
Corporation.
According to the World Gold Council, more than 174,000 tonnes of
gold have been extracted from Earth since the dawn of
civilisation.
In 2011, the US Geological Survey estimated there were 51,000
tonnes of gold left in reserve in the world.
Radford said using biogeochemical sampling had the potential to
make searching for gold deposits much easier.
"If you can sample on-surface, it saves all the cost and all the
time involved in drilling holes," he said.
Sixty percent of gold becomes jewellery, but it is also a crucial
component in electronics and is used in medical technology,
including for cancer treatment.
